To kick-start an entire year of celebration for its upcoming 20th Anniversary, Penobscot School will present Spanish Immersion Day with Jaqueline Cazares on Saturday, December 3. The event starts at 10:00 am and ends at 4:00 pm. Pre-registration is required and limited youth scholarships are available. The School is offering a 15% discount off of the regular fee of $108 ($93) for those who register by Monday, November 28.
Jaqueline is looking forward to Spanish Immersion Day and she gives us a little taste of things to come as follows: “Everybody is welcome, but please note that the level of instruction will be at the intermediate stage. The plan is to learn while we are having fun. I hope you folks like poetry, because I do and I will be sharing it with you. We will analyze a poem written by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. We will listen to and enjoy some special music and learn along with it. And last but not least, we will cook some delicious sopes, which are made from corn flour, like a tortilla but these are thicker and smaller. The sides of the sopes’ crust are built high to hold in the beans, fried chopped ribs, salsa, lettuce, and cheese. Along with the sopes, we will also make guacamole and Ague de Hardhat, a special cold Mexican drink. So, come and join us. It will be fun for everyone.”
Penobscot School’s 2005-2006 Spanish exchange teacher Jaqueline Cazares of Colima, Mexico will make the experience interactive, fun and inspiring with lots of opportunity to practice the target language. Spanish Immersion Day is designed for people who have studied Spanish and wish to reacquaint and immerse themselves in the language and culture for a day. Jaqueline currently teaches weekly Spanish language classes to adults and kids (K-1). During the next semester, which begins on January 23, Jaqueline will teach weekly Spanish language classes at the beginning, beginning advanced, intermediate and advanced levels. Jaqueline is also running a Spanish-language radio show on WRFR, where she offers music, poetry, and stories and legends from Mexico — all in Spanish, on Tuesdays from 9-10 pm.
For students who wish to develop an ear for the Spanish language or practice their conversation skills on a regular basis, brown-bag lunches are normally held Tuesdays from 12:15 to 1:15 pm at the School. The public, and not just students of the School are encouraged to attend these conversation sessions which are helpful to all levels of Spanish language learner. Jaqueline and friends of Penobscot School also hold potluck suppers and Spanish film nights the fourth Friday of each month with some holiday week exceptions. These Friday evening events are free and open to the public, and they provide another opportunity to practice listening and speaking Spanish. Contact Jaqueline at 207-594-7688 for Immersion Day details or to confirm language lunch and supper schedules.
